Saint Mary’s School is an independent, Episcopal, college-preparatory, boarding and day school for girls in grades 9–12. Saint Mary’s School is currently searching for a Groundskeeper Supervisor who will be responsible for supervising the performance of the groundskeeping staff and ensuring the school’s grounds and plants are maintained properly. The Groundskeeping Supervisor will report directly to the Director of Facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Director of Facilities.

  • Establish schedule and plan daily work assignments.  Fill in as necessary.
  • Licensed by the state to manage the ground application of chemical spraying (i.e., insecticides and pesticides).
  • Manages the application of fertilizers, mulch, and bedding materials.
  • Turf Management: Takes care of all grass and athletic fields, including mowing, seeding, edging and installing sod.
  • Works with athletic director to ensure fields and all other outdoor athletic facilities are safe and playable.
  • Responsible for maintaining and repairing the irrigation system throughout the campus.
  • Manages the planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Manage and assist with cleaning the grounds from weather storms including the removal of snow and ice throughout the campus.
  • Responsible for pruning of branches and removal of trees.
  • Works with the Director of Facilities in dealing with problems of external maintenance.
  • Maintains and repairs all of the grounds keeping equipment.
  • Train staff on the safe operation of equipment.
  • Wear all common protective or safety equipment, such as slip resistant shoes, steel toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection or hard hats as assigned for your position based on the training and instruction provided by your supervisor.
  • Responsible for the safe storage of all fuels and pesticides stored in the grounds keeping garage.
  • Serve as part of the severe weather emergency team.
  • Purchase all grounds keeping supplies and equipment and work with the Director of Facilities in maintaining the grounds keeping budget.
  • Inspect and approve staff work performance.
  • Communicate effectively to staff.
  • Conduct periodic employee performance review and discuss job performance with all direct reports.
  • Train and coach employees in all grounds keeping areas.
  • All other duties as assigned or needed.
  • Perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community and the academic program as required by your position or requested by your manager/supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to supervise staff members – leadership skills
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently
  • Ability to make independent and good judgment decisions within proper policy and procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be detailed oriented

 Physical Activities / Environmental Demands:

  • Have full range of mobility in upper and lower body
  • Be able to reach overhead
  • Be able to work in various positions, including, but not limited to, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling and squatting for extended periods of time
  • Be able to lift, pull, and push materials and equipment to complete assigned job tasks
  • Be able to drive and operate various lawn equipment
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds consistently with heavier weight necessary at times
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions

Education, Training, and Experience:

Requires completion of 2+ years of college and 5+ years horticulture and/or turf grass management or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
