Saint Mary’s School is offering a unique and exciting opportunity for a Director of Residential Life to live and work on our beautiful historic campus for the 2022-23 year. This benefited position offers campus housing provided by the School where you can participate in a vibrant campus life with other families and students and enjoy meals in the dining hall. This exceptional location is in the heart of downtown Raleigh in a gated campus with 24/7 security.

The Director of Residential Life will report directly to the Dean of Student Experience and will perform duties as necessary to administer a vibrant, healthy, successful Residential Life Program.  The Director of Residential Life will live on campus and serves on the residential faculty.

This position is residential and as such there is an opportunity to be a part of a close-knit residential faculty community where one lives on campus and works with students who board at the school.

Residential Faculty members report to the Director of Residential Life and are responsible for duty of the girls at least one night a week and one weekend a month, including participating as a chaperone/sponsor or in some other capacity in aspects of the student life program. The School may modify or add additional residential responsibilities based on the needs of the School.

The Director of Residential Life will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide strong and consistent leadership and vision, including annual strategic planning, goal setting, budgeting and assessment for the mission of the Residential Program;
  • Oversee the Residential program and ensures it is aligned with the School’s mission and the Student Life vision;
  • Implement and carry out the vision for the Residential Life community;
  • Establish a positive boarding school community culture where equity and inclusion is encouraged and boarding students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, and show compassion; and,
  • Ensure that the safety and academic, social and emotional well-being of the boarders is considered and prioritized in all aspects of the boarding school program, and
  • Creates/provides a warm, positive community atmosphere in the residence halls and on campus.

Oversight of the Residential program includes:

  • Working with the Student Life Team, develop and implement a comprehensive and cohesive Residential Life Curriculum;
  • Create and implement an effective support and supervision system for students with appropriate and equitable delegation of the responsibilities of duties;
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of residential life program including effectiveness of training, weekend activities, equity of responsibilities and duties;
  • Monitor individual students who are experiencing difficulties and share relevant information with StAR, school nurses, counselors, and advisors;
  • Develop appropriate student life skills programming;
  • Arrange and deliver professional development opportunities for residential faculty to train them for their role supervising, caring for and mentoring adolescent girls at an all-girls boarding and day school;
  • Coordinate and administer the Prefect selection process;
  • Train the boarding prefects to fulfill their leadership roles, and support them as they carry out their responsibilities within our community;
  • Oversee the residential life budget; and,
  • Provide direction for the Residential and Student Life Coordinator and ensure that the weekend activities program is enhanced to meet the goals of the Dean of Student Experiences’ vision.
  • Provide and lead programs that support healthy growth and development of adolescent girls.
  • Oversee, create, and develop the evening study program in conjunction with the Dean of Academic Innovation.

Supervision of Residential Faculty includes:

  • Training, supervising and leading all Residential Faculty, including but not limited to schedule, mentoring, communicating expectations, evaluating performance, etc.;
  • Develop and maintain a manual for residential faculty that supports the needs of the program and is aligned with the Employee handbook;
  • Scheduling duty rotations, keeping the duty calendar up to date keeping in mind the effective and efficient use of employees’ time;
  • Supervising the opening and closing of the residence halls;
  • Regularly meet with dorm heads to stay informed about the work done by and the needs of residential faculty; and,
  • Regular and constructive feedback to residential faculty throughout the year.

Partnering with numerous pivotal student support people to meet the safety, academic, social, and emotional needs of the students, includes:

  • The Office of Admission on rooming assignments prospective visitation and overnights;
  • The Residential Life staff in on-going Boarder orientation, Residential COMPASS Leadership programs, and other special events for boarding students;
  • The Dining Hall staff for special schedules and weekends;
  • The Dean of Student Experience to monitor fire drills, and general safety and security of boarders;
  • The Binder Health Center Staff to assist with student wellbeing;
  • The Parents Association  in support of the residential program; and,
  • Facilities to collaborate on and maintain dormitory facilities and Residential Faculty housing.

Administrative duties, consisting of, but not limited to:

  • Coordinating
    • all boarding student transportation for weekends and vacations;
    • day student and guest overnights on campus;
    • all special residential meals with the dining service;
  • Communicating with all boarding-parents, acting as a liaison for parents and the school;
  • Processing all student weekend, vacation and special permissions;
  • Organizing the weekly Residential Life meetings during which a Hall Agenda is generated;
  • Managing daily communications and weekend reports to Residential Faculty;
  • Managing the Residential Life budget;
  • Actively participate in the seminar by consulting with the design team as necessary and overseeing a section of seminar; and,
  • Perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community and the academic program as required by your position or requested by your manager/supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Strong work ethic, energy, and enthusiasm
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, as well as presentation skills
  • Ability to be a team player and to lead staff and teams of volunteers
  • Extraordinary organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of boarding school culture
  • Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Generally works in standard office conditions and climate.
  • May work in varied extreme outside weather conditions during special activities and fundraising events.
  • Works in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • May work at a desk on a phone and/or in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Regularly sit, talk, hear and interact with students, parents, staff and visitors.
  • Ability to move around campus, including walking and walking up and down flights of stairs (up to four (4) stories of a building at once).
  • Be able to drive or ride short and long distances in school-owned vehicles, including a 14-passenger bus.
  • Be able to ride short and long distances in charter buses.
  • Ability to drive at night.

The Director of Residential Life also serves as a member of various Student Life committees and serves as a faculty advisor to students.  The Director of Residential Life keeps the Dean of Student Experience informed of any matters pertaining to the boarding population, residence halls, and the residential life program.   The Director of Residential Life supports the School, its values and its leadership.
