Saint Mary’s School is currently searching for an Assistant Director of Learning Support Services to work on our beautiful historic campus for the 2021-22 year. This exceptional location is in the heart of downtown Raleigh in a gated campus with 24/7 security.
The Assistant Director of Learning Support Services will report to the Director of Learning Support Services (Director) and will work with the Director in developing, implementing, and overseeing academic support plans for students who are identified and diagnosed with learning differences. The Assistant Director will work with faculty, parents, and students in alignment with the Director, helping students understand themselves as learners and developing their academic skills; assisting faculty and parents to identify and seek diagnosis and support for their students; and fostering student growth to develop self-advocacy regarding their learning needs in a college-preparatory environment.
- Work closely with the Director to help create and implement academic and advising strategies that promote success and independence within a challenging college-preparatory curriculum.
- Work well in a team environment and collaborate with other support staff to assist faculty with successful implementation of pedagogical practices that support a universal learning environment.
- Keep abreast of changes and advancements within the field of learning support, differentiation of instruction, and instructional best practices to foster and initiate innovative systems and structures within the school.
- Research and implement various assistive technologies that help students to use their strengths to demonstrate their learning.
- Track student progress, implement accommodation plans, provide and support the professional development of faculty and serve as a resource and model for all classroom teachers and administrators in best instructional practices for students with learning differences.
- Provide data, using informal testing, to students who are struggling academically.
- Interpret the results of psycho-educational evaluations for teachers, parents, and students; help develop individualized learning plans for students based on findings.
- Communicate and collaborate with parents, teachers, and outside professionals to implement appropriate supports and accommodations.
- In alignment with the Director, create systems for ensuring ongoing testing and updating of profiles for students who are identified as gifted or who are having learning differences.
- Observe other classes to appraise student learning and progress, instructional effectiveness, and the appropriate implementation of learning plans for individual students.
- Provide consultation, counsel, and push-in support to teachers, as needed.
- Maintain a current list of local educational services for testing and with the collaboration of the Department Heads, provide appropriate information, recommendations, and counsel to families needing this service.
- In alignment with the Director, create study skills curriculum for 9th and 10th grade learning lab.
- In alignment with the Director, offer faculty workshops/professional development as needed for individualized student needs.
- Collaborate with Admissions Office concerning prospective students.
- Work with international students on ESL, as needed.
- Act as a testing coordinator for standardized testing on campus.
- With administrative assistance, vet online school providers and support students electing to take on-line classes through selection, registration, pacing and reporting.
- In alignment with the Director, provide resources for dorms to support learning and growth, time management, organization, and study skills.
- Coordinate tutors who work on campus, including background checks, and master tutor list.
- Assist with return-to-learn protocols for students having concussions or other medical issues.
- Perform other duties as necessary or as assigned.
Perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community and the academic program as required by your position or requested by your manager/supervisor.

- Possess a bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred, in special education, psychology, or other related field and a minimum of five years of experience in a school setting developing and implementing accommodation plans or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Know skills and strategies to support student academic development and achievement.
- Be familiar with the language and assessment tools used in educational-psych and gifted evaluations.
- Have experience with informal diagnostic testing.
- Demonstrate a nuanced understanding of learning challenges and gifted profiles as well as how to address them for optimal student achievement in a college preparatory environment.
- Have prior experience in handling learning accommodations with the College Board and standardized testing, preferred.
- Possess excellent interpersonal, collaborative, written and verbal communication skills.
- Have a working knowledge of current reading practices, intervention strategies, systematic reading curriculum, language-based learning disabilities, and differentiated instruction including giftedness.
- Can work effectively, professionally, and enthusiastically with children, parents, and teachers.
- Demonstrate ability in the areas of judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
- Demonstrate organization skills and ability to work independently.
