Saint Mary’s School is offering a unique and exciting opportunity for a Chaplain to live and work on a beautiful historic campus for the current 2019-20 year. This 11-month, benefited position offers campus housing provided by the School where you can participate in vibrant campus life. The School’s location is in the heart of downtown Raleigh and provides a gated campus with 24/7 security. The Chaplain reports to the Dean of Students and will be responsible for serving as the pastor to the Saint Mary’s community, including its students, employees, administrators, and alumnae. Saint Mary’s School seeks candidates who will enrich and promote the spiritual health and religious activities of the community.
The Chaplain’s primary role will be to serve as the spiritual leader and moral teacher for the Saint Mary’s community, including students, employees and other members of the community. The Chaplain will lead and promote the spiritual health and religious activities of the community and serve as a leader in fostering hospitality to all.
- Establish and build warm, authentic relationships with students, families, and colleagues. When a community member needs support, they should know their Chaplain knows and cares about them as an individual.
- Promote an authentic spirit of inclusivity, acceptance, and care for and within the community.
- Serve as a spiritual and moral mentor, teacher and leader for the School.
- Serve as a forward-thinking leader in shaping and stewarding our Episcopal identity through our programs and the people who serve our mission.
- Partner and collaborate effectively with others both academic and non-academic leaders on campus in supporting students.
- Serve as an empathetic, warm, creative, connector and community leader based on our Episcopal values and identity.
- Embrace opportunities to be a role model and leader while enthusiastically being a visible and active presence on campus.
- Establish and foster the ethos of hospitality to all constituents.
Worship Planning and Leadership
- Design and lead Chapel services, Vespers, and learning experiences thoughtfully and with purpose.
- Schedule, plan, design, coordinate, preside and preach at twice-weekly Chapel services and Sunday evening Vespers involving students, employees, and local community members, as needed.
- Plan and organize special school celebrations in the Chapel including special seasonal services, such as Advent Lessons and Carols, Reunion Weekend Chapel, and Baccalaureate.
- Encourage and lead Bible study and interfaith discussions among students and employees.
- Establish Chapel program and Vestry that fosters student participation and leadership.
- Provide more opportunities for small group worship for special needs of the community.
- Provide opportunities for fellowship among students and employees in order to promote a strong, balanced Christian community.
- Provide a pastoral presence and religious instruction to employees, students, alumnae, and parents for pastoral offices when requested and appropriate (e.g., weddings, funerals, Baptisms, preparation for Confirmation).
- As chief pastor of the Saint Mary’s School community, the chaplain ministers to the spiritual and personal well-being of the school community as a whole and to its individuals.
- Is adept at engaging with young adults, thoughtfully leading and navigating conversations and explorations that are culturally and socially relevant.
- Provide pastoral care for girls struggling with adolescent issues, attending to emotional and spiritual health and providing a connection to resources for counseling support.
- Minister to the needs of employees and families as opportunities present themselves.
- Serving as liaison with the School Counselors.
- Communicate with parents about the personal welfare of students.
- Monitor the school’s health and encouraging structures that promote the well-being of the school community.
The Chaplain, as an academic faculty member, reports to the Dean of Teaching and Learning.
- Actively participate in the seminar program by consulting with the design team, as necessary.
- Possesses an educator’s heart, a willingness to support faculty in preparation of lessons related to chaplaincy, and an openness to teaching academic (religion and ethics courses) classes, as needed.
- Thinks deeply and with frequent reflection about religious education, participating actively in our ongoing work ensuring our religious education program is impactful.
- Attend committee meetings, as necessary.
- Serve at “state occasions” (with parents, trustees, alumnae, and friends of the school) to represent the religious life of the school in a compelling fashion.
- Work with the admissions department to provide perspective on the spiritual life of the school;
- Attend alumni events, as requested.
- Participate, as schedule allows, in local clergy associations.
- Serve as a representative of Saint Mary’s School in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina.
- Serve as school liaison with outside religious organizations such as FOCUS and NAES, as well as diocesan youth programs.
The Chaplain reports to the Dean of Students and serve on the Student Life staff. As a residential faculty member, the Chaplain participates fully in the life of the campus community, as detailed in the residential faculty member position description.
- Work with the Dean of Students to schedule, plan, and implement the chapel program so that it, like other student programs, is responsive to the needs of the girls and the community.
- Meet regularly with the Student Life staff.
- Oversee all aspects of the Chapel and chapel programs, including supervision and training of acolytes, lay readers, and the Vestry, as well as chapel upkeep, maintenance, purchasing, and managing the Chapel’s budget.
- Serve as an advocate, when requested, for students and employees.
- Coordinate with communication staff to provide appropriate material about the Chapel and the Chapel program for the Saint Mary’s School magazine and
- Serve as a member of the health and wellness team building, implementing, and supporting the health and wellness programs and initiatives.
- Participate fully in the residential life program, under the supervision of the Dean of Students.
- Supporting the School and its leadership.
- Serve as an advisor to a small group of students.
- Participants in the development of meaningful community service and engagement experiences.
Perform weekend and night responsibilities to support the life of the residential community and the academic program as required by your position or requested by your manager/supervisor.
This position is residential and as such there is an opportunity to be a part of a close-knit residential faculty community where one lives on campus and works with students who board at the school. Residential Faculty members report to the Director of Residential Life and are responsible for duty of the girls at least one night a week and one weekend a month, including participating as a chaperone/sponsor or in some other capacity in aspects of the student life program.

- A priest in good standing in the Episcopal church.
- A master’s degree in Divinity, preferred.
- Experience in teaching, preferred.
- A strong desire and proven ability to relate to adolescents.
- Ability to develop and apply cultural competence and experience in leading diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in a community.
- Possesses strong communication skills, both as a speaker and writer.
- Intellectually nimble, highly detailed-orientated, and a flexible problem-solver.
- Demonstrated kindness toward students, parents, and employees.
- Willingness to extend self to promote the spiritual life of the School and understanding of the importance of the chapel program as a recruitment tool.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Regularly sit, talk, hear and interact with students, parents, employees and visitors.

- Be able to drive or ride short and long distances in school-owned vehicles, including a 14-passenger bus.
